Moving Experience
The moving experience auction was a success on Thursday 5th October 2023. All of us at Whoopsadaisy are grateful to everyone that attended and those that bid on the pieces.
On 5th October 2023, Whoopsadaisy charity hosted ‘Moving Experience’ – an art auction showcasing various local artists’ work – at Brighton Beach House.
We are asked artists, parents, supporters and Soho House Members to join us in making a difference to the lives of children with cerebral palsy and other motor disorders. The sale of this artwork helps us to provide a vital service that make a real difference in the lives of children with disabilities and their families. We had some wonderful pieces of artwork created by our children and some donated by celebrated local artists.
The art was auctioned at a special event at Brighton Beach House on Madeira Drive, Brighton. This was a collaboration and celebration of local creative talent alongside local communities and businesses.
We wish to raise peoples’ awareness of Whoopsadaisy’s work as well as the amazing talent of local artists.
How do I bid?
The event is now over. However some pieces did not meet their reserve prices. If you are interested in a piece then please get in touch.
Lockdown Canary Wharf Triptych
These photographs were taken the on the Docklands Light Railway the Thursday before the Monday that the first lockdown started – think it was 23/03/20. It was rush hour and it is the train is entering Canary Wharf where the streets and rush hour platforms were virtually empty. The colourisation is supposed to feel unreal and creepy it felt. All shots were taken out of the front window of the driverless train, which I used to frame the photographs.
Dimensions: 3 pieces, 400 x 570mm/print (40 x 57cm)

David Hockney in his pool
The series I photographed, which recently sold quite substantially via the Etherton Gallery in Tucson, Arizona, had been planned for some time. I wanted to get David into his pool and shoot pictures which described the distortion rendered by water to the human figure when recorded by a camera.
I chose black and white film, rejecting colour as I did not want to try and emulate David’s pool images, where turquoise is always the dominant colour (his favourite, by the way). It was like trying to coax an unwilling tarantula into a matchbox, albeit a large water-filled one. Many attempts failed, then finally, one late afternoon when the sun was all but gone, he appeared in his bathing suit.
I hurriedly stripped off and got in as well, and within no more than ten minutes I had recorded the full series pretty much just as I had imagined. Although David is very aware of cameras – what they are doing and seeing – and in a sense tacitly co-operated with my aspiration, he never commented on the event or asked to see the results. They were taken in 1990 and were not printed as a complete set for 30 years.
However, in professional as well as aesthetic terms, that was the most intense and photographically creative ten minutes of my artistic life.

Small Caervallack Garden Walk (5)
Geoff Hands is a landscape painter who typically explores and develops his original source drawings into abstracted and gestural paintings from a variety of locations in the UK. A residency in Cornwall a few years ago lead to a series of paintings based on a psychogeographic process of walking around and drawing a memorable garden in the St Martin area. The subsequent paintings were developed into a series of acrylic paintings.
Geoff is based at the Phoenix Art Space in Brighton and is a member of the Ruminators Arts Collective. He also writes exhibition reviews and is currently writing a book of commentaries on painting practice.

I Only Want the Moon and Stars
Nina Garstang is an abstract painter experimenting with enamel paints and other chemicals onto glass, creating internal and universal landscapes. She is fascinated by and in wonder at the connection of the repeated symmetry of forms found in nature, from the universe to our own human physiology.
The glass acts as a mirror mimicking the screens of our phones to reflect the viewer, so they may see themselves in the bigger picture. These paintings highlight humanity’s disruptive impact on nature and altered states in our bodies through chemical imbalance.
Garstang lives and works in Brighton and holds an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art and her work is exhibited nationally and internationally with many works held in private and public collections.

Heart on Her Sleeve
Kate Montgomery studied at The Ruskin School of Drawing & Fine Art, Oxford and the RCA in London. In 1992 Kate was artist in residence at the Prince of Wales’ Institute of Architecture. Her work is held in both private and public collections around the world.
Kate lives on the south coast: sources for her paintings are found through walking in the Sussex countryside, running by the sea, and the interiors and gardens of Georgian and Victorian houses and museums in Brighton & Hove. Kate’s paintings often suggest interior spaces associated with female responsibility, creativity and desire. Silent houses with children playing outside, workrooms, a costume gallery… Real time and space are avoided, permitting personal histories and fictions to be read.

Water's Edge
Graham Read made many drawings in monochrome and showed a versatility of skill handling charcoal, chalks, and inks in this way.
This drawing accompanies many studies of water, both in colour and black and white, and reveals an acute observation of the natural world as well as the influence of Japanese prints and drawings.
Graham Read, as a livelong blood donor, would have been delighted to donate this work to raise money for ‘Whoopsadaisy’, a charity which provides support for children and their families experiencing the consequences of an acute medical diagnosis.

Goddess Vs 2023
“A series of collage images inspired by a trip to India where I was very taken by the daily worship in temples and the informal and natural ritual.
I came back thinking “What do we worship in the West?””
We seem to hold expensive handbags and trainers highly , inviting queues of people ‘worshipping’ new shoes and flashy bags , status gods and goddesses in the temples of Harrods and Selfridges.
They are playful and highly decorative images, aligned to the ornate and colourful images of Hindu gods.”

Joyful Reflections
My name is Fiona Bailey. I’ve lived in Brighton for over 30 years and have been painting for 8 years. I’ve had no formal art training but have discovered a passion for it.
I am considered mature, but don’t consider it myself!
At the beginning, I attended a class with Local Artist Barr Spur. She gave me my confidence and unlocked a gift I never dreamt I had.
I enjoy creating imaginary scenes as well as portrait pencil drawings and interpreting photographic scenes to my particular style. I use mixed media but mainly Acrylics. You will find me on Instagram fionab.art – I do accept commissions but in a very relaxed way!
I am passionate about my hobby. I see myself as a playfully charitable artist any sales keep me in paints and canvas’s and the rest I give to Charity.
I’m so glad I can help raise funds for Whoopsadaisy in the upcoming Art Auction on 5th October. I hope on the day of the auction you find a treasure which will help this wonderful Charity.

“Colin Ruffell was born in 1939, then he was bombed, evacuated, educated, expelled, repatriated, married, bred, qualified and taught; until in 1965, aged 26, he became a professional artist. Since then he is, “”very thankful, prud and happy to survive as a full time artis!””
He qualified from two it Colleges in painting using and printmaking, and the Open University in psychology and aes’netics, plus he has reasonably clean driving license.
His pictures are varied. He paints in many styles. Some images are childlike and amusing, others are traditional landscapes, and yet more are complex modernist abstract relationships of colour, texture and shape. He admits that he paints in explosive bursts, necessarily punctuated by long spells of getting ready or recovery from the last effort.”

Silver Sea, near Rottingdean
My images are almost entirely of landscape and skies. Most are of local scenes, although images taken on holiday do also feature. All the images I have given you to sell are of local scenes, and the sky is the main subject.
For the technically curious, I use Canon cameras, previously DSLRs and now Mirrorless. My images are very much taken on local walks (which can be local to anywhere I’ve been!) While mostly in and around Brighton, I have shown images taken in Québec, France, Switzerland, Germany and Costa Rica. An underlying theme is my concern for the environment and climate change.
I started serious photography with a view to showing my work in 2008, with our first Artists Open House.
My work has been shown in venues such as St Augustine’s and St Laurence at Falmer, and in the past with an artists group in Normandy around an arts venue called La Linerie, and before that within the Chateau de Bosmalet
I am delighted to be able to donate my work to Whoopsadaisy, a small charity which supports disabled children with conditions such as Cerebral Palsy.

Flowering
The print is a digital illustration made with the risograph printing technic from a small edition of my art publication. It is about seeking happiness in different religions and philosophies. This illustration aims to show the inner harmony, balance, purification and flowering, that Buddhism also seeks to achieve. The meditating figure represents the innermost self, and the 8 flowers rising from it represents one of the basic teaching of Buddhism, the eightfold path, the 8 virtues we can reach inner perfection by.

Sunset Over Staffin Bay I
June Frickleton is a Scottish artist based in the Brighton. She uses a personal vocabulary to create sumptuous abstract paintings that deal with pure colour and form. The paintings have a strong visual impact that is heightened by the use of a reduced palette.
The recent paintings have become more concerned with the process of painting, the surfaces are stained, with numerous washes of paint applied to create layers. The paintings are often worked on the floor where pools of paint are applied. Although the paint can be guided it cannot be completely controlled so there is often a serendipitous discovery in the final outcome, unsuccessful layers are washed away and reapplied, the process of making a single painting can take days or weeks.

Patrick’s current and ongoing practice explores ideas around the perception of shapes in suggested, constructed and real space. Developed over recent years from the geometry within domestic settings and the poetics of space, he has been interested in the idea of boundaries, territories and zones with the subsequent effects when they meet or merge.
The paintings donated for auction are examples of recent original works on paper from his CV911series created in 2020. Essentially dealing with flat masked shapes of colour and playing with the various spatial relationships within the arena of the picture plane, different and/or distinct elements combine to create the whole. He showed a collection of works from this series in the Saturation Point Exhibition – Sunday Salon : Temporal Objects in Deptford, summer 2021.

Whoopsadaisy is the most fantastic charity that has done so much for our son Rudi. Rudi was born with a heart condition meaning he was in hospital for the first 4 months of his life requiring major heart surgery. When he came home, he still had a lot of recovering to do meaning he was behind developmentally.
Through Whoopsadaisy Rudi has done so well and is now chasing his twin around the house crawling, which at times we thought he’s never going to do. His sessions at Whoopsadaisy were fun and gave him the confidence to move more.
This piece is from a dear old friend, Cecily Rose Tattersall from university years who is now a well know artist, whose work is dramatic and impactful. We are donating this much-loved artwork to help Whoopsadaisy raise funds so that they can continue to provide this much needed service.

Lost Garden No.3
Ned Hoskins was primarily a painter of abstract landscapes influenced by his interests and travels. He is well known locally as the man who started the Open House Movement in Brighton and Hove in 1981 and exhibited his work in the Fiveways Group as well as in galleries around the world.
I have chosen this piece because Ned was a keen gardener and spent many happy hours on our allotment. We also visited many gardens throughout this country and abroad. The piece is based on a visit to the Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall. This garden affected Ned greatly and he painted a small series of paintings based on this visit and this is one of that series.

Lucianna Whittle is an abstract painter working from Studio 106 in Hove. Driven by a love of painting in its purest form, her work centres around the felt experience of art. She has also been interviewed for The Pointless Artist Podcast and is passionate about the unique gifts that art can bring to everyone.

Two clashes of sides, like two sides of a person. When being part of this project, I was having a very tough time in my life. It was nice just to relax while painting and put whatever I wanted onto the canvas. It felt like freedom. I think that freedom is beneficial to everyone.

Untitled 3
10 young people (12 – 20 years old), some with Cerebral Palsy and some young volunteers took part in a project where we explored a way of expressing, thinking and feeling – abstract art.
They were asked to let their thoughts and feelings lead them as they explore colours, textures, different tools to spread the paint on a big canvas. 2-3 people worked on the same canvas, but added their own individual part to it.
As a first experience of making such a big art piece, they had an amazing time, working individually but also as a team, exploring, and watching it become something beautiful.

Mr and Mrs Andrews (Study IV)
Primarily a landscape painter, Geoff Hands’ recent paintings have incorporated visual references to imagery from the past, including Rubens, Watteau and Titian. Here, Mr and Mrs Andrews from the Gainsborough original in the National Gallery in London have been referenced and transformed into a more abstracted, painterly language.
Geoff is based at the Phoenix Art Space in Brighton and is a member of the Ruminators Arts Collective. He also writes exhibition reviews and is currently writing a book of commentaries on painting practice.

The Zebra of my Soul
The Zebra of my Soul began as an experimental collaborative piece for Chip’s 9th birthday.
At the party, all of the guests were invited to simultaneously lay the foundation for the artwork with the base colour. When a dozen 9 year olds are given a huge amount of paint and no guidelines, the inevitable consequence is that all the paint ends up on the canvas in 1 homogenous colour…black.
Once the foundation had dried over approximately 3 weeks, using a mylar stencil, Chip overlaid a white Zebra on the black backdrop and worked in collaboration with his sister and two close friends to construct the final piece over a number of sessions, using a combination of free brush strokes, free poured paint and stencil overlays.
The piece speaks to the way in which Chip engages with his friends in creative collaboration, inviting them into his world, into his art studio on his terms and to share in his vision for creative expression as a collaborative effort. Like friendship in early life, the Zebra of my Soul is intentionally free from rules or structure and captures the push and pull of high energy friendships in the pre-teen age.

Trees at Batemans II
In my prints I am interested in exploring places and situations that resonate with me on an emotional level.
I am drawn to working with space, both intimate and expansive. My prints are developed from original drawings paintings and photos,
And the prints making process is one of my simplification and interpretation which affords an opportunity to explore colour and mark making.
My enthusiasm for Japanese arts and crafts has run alongside an interest in Japanese massage and healing, which has been a source of inspiration in my work. I am interested in drawing and painting and the vibrant use of colour found in works of art.
I work in Lithography, etching and relief printing and find that different media compliment each other.

Tree, Hove Park
Graham Read was a prolific artist whose work encompassed many styles and explored a variety of themes. The natural world was a source of inspiration throughout his life, and he made many drawings of trees in and around Sussex, where he lived. This specimen in Hove Park was a favourite.
Graham would have been delighted to donate this painting to raise money for ‘Whoopsadaisy’, a charity which puts care of children at its very heart.

The call of the running tide
“John Conduct has enjoyed drawing since he could pick up a pencil. He focuses mainly on pen and ink, in a variety of styles. His main audience being his 7 children and 9 grandchildren.
He has always had an affinity with the sea and this is often reflected in the subjects of his artwork.
From the artist: It’s been an honour to donate my work to raise money for Whoopsadaisy and the incredible work they do. This is a charity close to my heart as my grandson Arthur was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and the care he has been given by the staff at Whoopsadaisy’s has been wonderful. “

Seven Sisters White Chalk Cliffs
My name is Alejandro Martínez Rodríguez although I sign. my work as alej ez.
I am an architect and artist born in Granada, Spain. I moved to the UK in 2000 and since 2007 I have lived and worked in Brighton, a city by the sea in the south east of England.
My practice is threefold. Firstly, I draw or take photographs of coastal views, landscapes and cityscapes and then I translate these into delicate line ink drawings in the studio before scanning and adding colour digitally. A limited edition run of each print is then produced.
My architectural training is clear in my prints: the delicate use of line, the precision of structures and forms, the scale and sense of space conveyed in colour and tone.
By creating views of much-loved places, I aim to provoke an emotional response with a thoughtful application of colour and rhythmic use of line, and furthermore through art, to make sense of the world.

Yarnia
This piece of art was made by 5 young children (5-9 years old) with Cerebral Palsy and Spina Bifida, as part of a project in “The world around us” termly topic. Children with cerebral palsy can have challenges using their hands and fingers for fine movements.
This project was part of their program to develop their fine motor skills, improve coordination, strengthen their grip and increase hand-eye coordination, while working in a team and learning about the topic. Every child connected to this piece in a way and had such lovely stories and experiences to share of their different cultures, languages, foods, clothes.
This string world map represented the connections and equality for us.

Sophie Abbott is a prolific abstract landscape painter based at the Phoenix Art Space in Brighton. Her paintings are a spontaneous and sensual reaction to the land or sea. With a joyous and strong use of colour, and a predilection for expressive mark making, this approach compliments expansive colour drenched areas of paint that create colour fields of immersive atmospheres. Constant source of inspiration are the ever-changing seas and skies on the south coast, and the landscapes she visits on her travels. Her paintings are exhibited in gallery shows, at numerous Art Fairs and have also appeared on television.

Havana Swell
‘Havana Swell ‘ is part of a body of work produced in response to my being in Cuba just after Hurricane Katrina struck and is also one of several pieces exploring the ocean and all its moods.
I live and work by the sea in my coastal studio in North Norfolk and my work is always a response to the landscape in which I find myself. The original mixed media painting has been sold and this limited edition print of that work is a small, select edition printed by the artist onto lovely fine-art paper. These editions never exceed 11 in number.

Mirrored Murmuration
“Most evenings between November and March you’ll find me and a small bunch of murmuration fans huddled together trying to keep warm as we wait for the starlings to perform, or not, at one or other of Brighton’s piers. On occasions the sea and sky are the main act, as in this evening in 2022 when the calm sea took an almost mirror-like quality, reflecting the colour of the sky.
I’m a Brighton based photographer, splitting my time between commercial commissions and my own projects which I have exhibited regularly in and around Brighton and further afield. “

My name is Feco Paulik, I live in Hungary, where people know me as “Ferminator”. When I was born, my brain didn’t get enough Oxygen which damaged those areas responsible for speech and movements. My arms and legs don’t obey me, I can’t control them. I can’t speak either, I can only make sounds. Since I was little, I’ve been learning to point and communicate with a stick attached to my forehead. I started painting when I was 8 years old using my head stick. Today I use my laptop, send text messages, and through my paintings my arms and legs come alive, I can share my thoughts and feelings. Because we, people with Cerebral Palsy are unique, yet we are just like anyone else. We live, we feel and we love.
With these of my paintings I am honoured to show everyone what people with CP can achieve and support Whoopsadaisy to help more children to achieve whatever they dream of. I’ve been supported by organisations like this small charity throughout my life which helped me to get where I am now. This is my chance to support hopefully lots of others!

Sisters
“This is a recent work by Rachel Brooks Read, as a member of Salt Edge Arts, and was included in their exhibition, ‘Time and Tide’ at South Barn, Seven Sisters, Seaford this year.
This image, ‘Sisters’ was informed by the theme and location of the exhibition and is one of several pieces embracing the notion of the ‘cliff face’ or ‘faces’. The addition of gold leaf was a stipulation of the brief and enhances the illustrative quality of the composition.
Rachel is delighted to have been invited to donate a piece of work for auction and wishes ‘Whoopsadaisy’ every success in their fundraising for such a vital and worthwhile cause.”

Paint the Sky
Denise Harrison is based at the Phoenix Art Space studio in Brighton. Typically for her practice she spends time researching the various locations that she paints as well as responding directly to the subject matter. For example, she spent a year’s residency at Stanmer House, a Georgian Manor, where she drew and painted whilst exploring its history for her Masters degree in Painting (UAL).
These two donated studies were made from the servants’ quarters at the top of the house. The carefully selected views are from the large round window at the front and back kitchen windows, giving some of the best panoramic and privileged views of the grounds for, ironically, the household servants.
Denise is also an art educator and commissioned author of ‘If You’re Bored with Acrylics, Read this Book’ (Octopus Publishing).
Her paintings are held in collections throughout Europe.
